DORNA

CONSERVATION OF THE TRADITIONAL MARITIME HERITAGE AND SHIPBUILDING

www.proyectodorna.eu

DORNA

Dorna has made progress in the conservation of the traditional maritime heritage and shipbuilding in wood from two fronts: inventory and compilation of existing assets and economic stimulation from different points of view: commercial (Brand BATE, craft marketing platform), innovative (Eco-navigation, life cycle analysis), tourism (Exhibitions and integrated tourism product).

The synergies with projects with similar thematic (ANCORIM, WOOBTA, NEA2, FISHERNET) had allowed optimizing the management, expanding the relationships network of the project itself beyond the realm of their rightful objectives. In addition there were contacts with organizations at European level: European Maritime Heritage, Universities or regional governments.

The project has highlighted the indispensability of transnational cooperation to tackle problems and set up projects with such ambitious objectives that results can only be achieved through this kind of collaboration, which provides the needed critical mass of experience and know-how. This collaboration between partners and associates and the dissemination conducted in the sector at transnational level become essential actions for the future of the project once it's finished, facilitating their transfer and sustainability.
Once the eligibility period of DORNA has expired, a new phase will be promoted, designed to promote the products generated during the project, continuing the partnership in touch by supporting the setting up of a network which ensure the continuation and the usefulness of the work developed so far.
This network, which represents the sustainability of the project, will    meet   once a year and will have two essential objectives: identifying new partners and ensuring the transferability of elaborated products.

Tangible results
Considering the main objective of the project, "the conservation and recovery of traditional nautical heritage of the regions of the European Atlantic coast", it must be  noted that DORNA has followed all the steps needed to achieve this goal, that involved the identification and compilation of all existing assets, the analysis for the rehabilitation of construction infrastructure, promoting marketing through its prestige and a sales platform, the introduction of the innovative element in a traditional art, the public awareness and boosting the tourism.
Given that all activities that had the objectives described above have been developed, we currently have a number of studies and optimal tools to achieve the goal that has been the reason of the project. These results should be viewed with a high potential to replicate in a larger context, since this is precisely the ultimate goal of many of the deliverables generated (database, catalogues...)

The establishment of the permanent European network allows to formally establish a network which aims to involve more territories and encourage the active participation of those who are already part of the network. The recovery master plan for existing traditional shipyards infrastructures is a first step to have an impact on loDORNA logocal and regional policies.
The technical proposal to recover one of the shipyard, developed in the project, would be an example that the traditional shipyards can be recovered. The BATE brand and marketing platform of traditional boats enables to be closer to the market, which was one of the difficulties identified by stakeholders.
